(December4, 2012) Chalk one up in the win column for Hawaii Island United Way (HIUW) as Jesse Sapolu and HouseMart’s administrative staff teamed up for a Book Signing fundraiser. Jesse, a 49er great, UH Manoa and Farrington High School alum, debuted his new book, I Gave My Heart To San Francisco, chronicling his arduous yet successful career in the NFL, sharing it with the local community in Hilo. Best of all, much of the proceeds from the event went to benefit the HIUW.
While Jesse was the headliner for the fundraiser, the silent and live auctions also scored touchdowns with the crowd. 49er memorabilia were just some of the items up for grabs as well as a grand prize of tickets to a 49er game with a VIP tailgate party! There were two bidders going back and forth and at the end Jesse threw in two more tickets so both bidders were winners and the HIUW benefited by the double donation. HouseMart’s administrative staff was there to help coordinate the auctions, talk story with people waiting to receive Jesse’s autograph, and ensured many received door prizes.
“It was an exciting event!” said HouseMart team member Sandy L. “It was really successful, all the items were bid on. The bar was full of people and fans were lined up outside of the door just to meet Jesse. He’s a real nice and humble man. I had to buy a book!” When asked why she volunteered, she said “It was for a good cause and all it took was just a little bit of my time. It was really nice to do and I would do something for United Way again.”
HouseMart was able to donate over 20 hours of volunteer time to the Hawaii Island United Way. The team participated in the book signing as part of project Caring for Communities, an initiative aimed at making positive change within the community through volunteerism.
